Visualizing/Performing Blackness in the Afterlives of Slavery: A Caribbean Archive (Spanish)

On April 19, the Working Group on Slavery and Visual Culture will be launching its first digital exhibit, "Visualizing/Performing Blackness in the Afterlives of Slavery: A Caribbean Archive," curated by Danielle Roper.

The exhibit will feature the work of nine performance and visual artists from the Caribbean on our new digital platform: “The Afterlives of Slavery.” Each artist was invited to create a digital performance/visual art piece reflecting on the legacies of slavery in their respective countries. We have chosen the Caribbean to account for multiple structures of racial domination that emerged from different histories of slavery and articulated through iconographies of blackness.

We will launch the exhibit during two virtual roundtables with the invited artists on April 19 (in English) & 20 (in Spanish), 4pm CST.

"The Afterlives of Slavery" is sponsored by the Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society and for the Center for the Study of Race, Politics, and Culture (CSRPC).

El 19 de abril el Grupo de Estudios en Esclavitud y Cultura Visual lanzará su primera exhibición digital, "Visualizaciones y performances de lo negro en el más allá de la esclavitud: un archivo caribeño", curada por Danielle Roper.

Esta exhibición presentará el trabajo de nueve artistas visuales y performeros caribeños en nuestra nueva plataforma digital: "The Afterlives of Slavery". Invitamos a cada artista a crear una obra de arte o performance
sobre los legados de la esclavitud en sus respectivos países. Escogimos el Caribe para dar cuenta de las múltiples estructuras de dominación racial que emergieron de sus distintas historias de la esclavitud, articuladas a través de diversas iconografías de
lo negro.

Lanzaremos la exhibición en dos conversatorios virtuales con los artistas invitados el 19 de abril (en inglés) y el 20 de abril (en español), a las 4pm CST.
